The History of Excel International
Excel Retreat Ministries was created in response to the exclusion and mistreatment of LGBT+ individuals at traditional Christian retreats. During a time when people identifying as LGBT+ were not welcome in many Christian spaces, often being turned away or subjected to mistreatment, Excel’s leaders recognized the need for an inclusive and affirming environment. They established Excel Retreat Ministries to provide a space where LGBT+ Christians could deepen their relationship with God in a welcoming, affirming, and supportive community.
Before we became Excel Retreat Ministries, we were Excel International. The history of Excel International began in the 1970’s when the Rev. Richard Mickley adapted Cursillo as a one-time special retreat for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Community Church congregation. That first weekend was so popular that the group continued hosting weekends in Christian Community Living.
Soon, people throughout The Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Church heard about Excel and traveled to California to attend one of these weekends. In 1980, the “Excel of the Redwoods” in the San Francisco area formed and conducted their first weekend with the assistance of the Excel of the City of Angels team from Los Angeles.
In that same year, a team was formed in Arizona, Excel in the Desert. The word had spread that this program of lay education and renewal was not only needed but would make a positive contribution to the life of a local congregation. The history of Cursillo in the early 1950s was repeated in Excel in the early 1980s.
For over five decades, Excel Retreat Ministries has continued to evolve, now dedicating itself to helping all individuals strengthen their love for God through spiritual retreats in an affirming environment. With teams in Alabama, Houston, and Nashville, we currently offer our Excel 101 and Couples in Excel Retreats, fostering a welcoming, affirming, and supportive community for everyone.
What is Excel?
Excel fosters spaces that nurture both community and spiritual growth within a supportive and affirming faith-based environment. We create a space where we can come together as a community to uplift and inspire one another through our individual spiritual journeys. Our retreats offer a sanctuary where individuals can explore their faith, deepen their connection with their spirituality, and cultivate meaningful relationships with others who share similar beliefs. Through guided discussions, reflective practices, and immersive experiences, we aim to create an atmosphere of acceptance and encouragement, where individuals feel empowered to explore their beliefs, ask questions, and discover new insights. Our inclusive approach ensures that everyone feels welcome and valued, regardless of their background or beliefs. Our commitment is to provide a safe and inclusive space where all are welcome to explore, learn, and grow in their faith and spirituality. Join us as we journey together towards a deeper understanding of God’s love and grace, finding solace and inspiration in the tranquil settings of our retreats.
